I came across this article in one of my favorite online magazines, Slate.com.

They are normally excellent critics of everyday life, particularly pop culture and politics, but I think they need to hire a new sports writer. He complains about the illegitimacy of the Cardinals in the Superbowl and describes the NFL playoff system in terms of the "everyone gets a trophy little league" model. I feel like he drastically misses the point of the shrewd business philosophy of the NFL. The way they have designed the playoffs there are new teams in the Superbowl every year. This keeps the sport fresh and the fans interested, because perhaps this year, it is your turn to take the national stage. It is similar to the NCAA tournament in which a cinderella can string together a few wins and find themselves in a position that they could not have achieved in the regular season. I don't think this guy would criticize the best post-season system in all of sports so why criticize a similar system?
I take his point about the New England game. I have already described my disgust with that debacle but I wonder if he would have written this same piece about the Chicago Bears from a few years ago.
Thoughts?
