Happy Ending: Las Vegas Bowl Champs

Usually when someone says they got a happy ending in Vegas they are referring to a rub and tug in a downtown skin palace. But for the Wildcats and Mike Stoops their dreams came true in Sam Boyd Stadium where they thoroughly dispatched an outclassed BYU team.

I was totally wrong about this game. I had watched BYU beat-up UCLA and threaten to shake-up the BCS and thought we were in a lot of trouble. The BYU gameplan inexplicably ignored their potent run game and tried to out air-attack the Cats. This was a mistake.

Tuitama had all day in the pocket which allowed him to throw vertical on nearly every possession. I am willing to bet that the cats threw more times over 20 yards in this one game than they did all season. I don't know if this was because of all the time that the QB had or if it they decided that their wide receivers would dominate the Cougar secondary but it was devastatingly effective.

BYU missed three field goals that would have made this game much more interesting but the Cats could also have won this by four touchdowns. The cold seemed to play havoc on ball control as both teams were plagued by turnovers. The constant fumbles made for a sloppy game.

If you erase the elements the Cats protected better, ran better, and hit harder (the defense was brutal). In the end, these attributes carried the day.

What does this win mean for next season? We don't have Tuitama but we looked really tough in our last two games. The defense comes back and so do the running backs.

Predictions on next years record?
