Let me start off with a quote:
“In the scrimmage I watched Jordan Hill traveled 6 times and we only played half a game because of widespread leg cramps on the team. If that doesn't say we turned into ASU i don't know what does. SIX!”
I am not going to say who wrote that (Tyler Tussey), but I watched UofA play some little school with a rank of 4 out of 342 and beat them on a neutral court (well somewhat neutral). Now I don’t remember seeing Jordan Hill travel 6 times, as a matter of fact, he wasn’t on the court long enough to travel 6 times, but he did have 22 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks. Perhaps UofA has adopted a new calf workout that within a month, these kids aren’t cramping up anymore but beating top 5 schools.
By tournament time, and yes UofA will be in it as long as zero injuries come their way, the team will have definitely raised its basketball IQ, specifically Horne…I hope. But to put it in perspective, if Horne’s IQ was a bit higher, we realistically would be undefeated and after this win, a top 10 ranked team. Now I dare you to find a better threesome in college right now with Hill, Wise, and Budinger. I haven’t felt this much confidence in a point guard at UofA since before the Mustafa age. Budinger is now in an offensive system that lets him score in the upper teens and shows life on the defensive end. Hill is just a freakish athlete that against big guys in college who aren’t as mobile as he is, has an advantage on the offensive side of the court while I believe giving up a little on the defensive side (as long as he stays out of foul trouble by not trying to block shots that he shouldn’t even try…once again experience).
I agree
On to the Pac-10….has anybody seen UCLA? Now their defense is great and judging by last year’s performance, UofA thought it was great as well. However, UCLA’s offense is atrocious. Ive never seen a collection of more people that cant create for themselves. And Josh Ship is like 40 years old with a beer belly, so I actually do believe we will be much more competitive in those contests. Now, Im not trying to say we’re the best, I actually believe we will be around 3rd or 4th in the league, but once again, experience is what we’re collecting on the way. I think that Pac-10 is vastly underrated this year, take a look at UCLA, USC, ASU(and regardless of hatred for them, they’ll be a tourney team that can make it to the second round), Washington St. and maybe Stanford (?) and UofA. Im not so much sure about
So now I ask how far or if you think UofA can make it to the tourney? I believe they can and they can be a Sweet 16 team if they are ranked 7 or above.
See you all in Vegas…go
Phil great post. As usual among the massive amount of hyperbole you make some excellent points. I was incredibly impressed with the cats against the Zags. I was ready to celebrate another moral victory toward the end when I was positive we would blow the lead.
ReplyDeleteI honestly think Gonzaga is among the best teams in the nation and our big three is good enough to hang with anyone. We will not always get favorable referee nights (ehmm...A&M) but as long as they are on the floor we will be really tough.
Nic Wise is much better than even I had originally thought. I have always been a fan of his. His freshmen year I told tyler that he was a rising star.
You are exactly right about Budinger's defense. Which seems like an oxymoron but he is tough. Do you think we will be in that trap zone more often now or was that just exposing a Gonzaga weakness.
Hill may be the best player on the team. It is strange to say but Budinger may be playing second fiddle again. I don't know what that says for his NBA abilities but I can tell you that Hill is going to be lottery pick if he keeps playing like this. If he stays out of foul trouble and that is a huge "if" no one can stop him. Especially UCLA...
You are exactly right about the Bruins. They play great defense but without an inside game they are going to get beat more than they ever have.
I know that this was the final game of a road trip for Gonzaga and that it was December but I am encouraged by the Wildcats fire.
Now if we can only get Zane Johnson in the starting line-up....
Last year about this same time UA beat a ranked Texas A&M team and everybody thought they were going to take off. Then reality set in and we never improved. Let's see how we play on the road against UNLV and at home against Kansas. Then we can start wondering about their NCAA tourney chances. Looking at the schedule I thought the Zaga game was the beginning of a three game losing streak. If they turn it into a three game winning streak they could get a 7 seed or better come March.
ReplyDeleteHarsh! Nice reality check father but you are bringing the group down.
