Now it is the coach of Xavier, Sean Miller.
That could be good. I was really impressed with their play in the tourney thou I had them out in the first round in my bracket.

This article also describes the coaches that have gilted us,
"Arizona went down a similar path last week with USC coach Tim Floyd. He interviewed, was offered the gig but chose to remain with the Trojans. Arizona tried to pursue Gonzaga's Mark Few and Pitt's Jamie Dixon prior to interviewing Floyd."

"It was up to Livengood and Shelton to change his mind. Apparently, they tried their best, offering Miller a significant pay increase from his close to $1 million contract at Xavier. But after thinking things through, and knowing he can coach a team to his first Final Four next year, Miller has let some close to him know he is staying at the Jesuit school in Cincinnati, according to sources."

ReplyDeleteHere's ESPN's report last night:

Well apparently, he's had a change of heart. It's been reported now on Yahoo and ESPN that he's accepted the offer:

But damn, at what a cost:
"Wetzel lists the contract terms of $18 million over seven years — $2.57 million per year — with a $1 million signing bonus...Miller, 40, would be earning more than UCLA’s Ben Howland ($1.97 million), North Carolina’s Roy Williams ($2 million), Texas’ Rick Barnes ($2 million), Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski ($2.2 million), Louisville’s Rick Pitino ($2.25 million), Ohio State’s Thad Matta ($2.5 million). Andy Katz article:
ReplyDeleteXavier coach Sean Miller finally decides to take job at Arizona
Katz points out some reasoning why so many elite level coaches spurned Arizona:
"Gonzaga's Mark Few, Pitt's Jamie Dixon and then-Memphis coach John Calipari (before he went to Kentucky)...weren't willing to go to Arizona is because of the rebuilding job ahead. A number of coaches told ESPN.com that if they didn't have to leave, the money was comparable and they were winning, then they didn't want to start over, even at a program with the name recognition of Arizona."
